NO STRAIGHT LINES
“Old Friends” by Kirsten Savage, 18×24 oil (SOLD)
I have been watching a lot of sci-fi fantasy movies lately that skew with the perception of time– Interstellar, The Arrival, Doctor Strange. It’s wonderfully freeing to think of time as non-linear. Not bound by the concepts of past, present, and future. Not marking the passing of the years on each New Year’s Eve or birthday. Not feeling the weight of past regrets or worrying about what is in our future.
Lately, I’m wondering how I could incorporate this into my art. When I tell people that I’m an artist, they often reply, “I can’t even draw a straight line.” Well, I can’t either. I love art without straight lines- Gaudi’s crazy organic architecture; music that flows from the fingertips with the emotions of the heart rather than the mechanical beats of a metronome; the brush strokes that “lose the edge” and show life and movement in a static image.
If we can step back from the tight linear control of our space and time, we see that we’re not living in a box but on a pale blue sphere. Maybe the real beauty is not along the sharp edges, but hidden within the natural curves of a baby’s hand, a woman’s hip, or an old man’s smile.
